Savory Tamatar (tomato) chutney

Tamatar chutney plays the role similar to that of a loving well wisher. It stands by you, is easy to like, compliments most things you do and doesn’t complain. Tamatar chutney goes will with bread, parathas, roti, chips (like salsa), chaat, as a topping on a rather dull dish. In other words, it seldom is the star attraction, and yet, it adds so much flavor to your meal. It can be made in several different ways, sweet, savory, spicy and what not, but the savory and rather simple kind is my favorite.

Savory Tamatar Chutney

Ingredients to make 3 cups of it

  • 6 medium vine tomatoes
  • 2 jalapeno peppers
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • salt to taste

Blend the tomatoes and peppers to liquid.

In a sauce pan, heat the oil.

Add the garlic and saute it until it’s nice and golden.

Now add the turmeric and saute for just another half a minute.

Add the tomatoes and let this cook down. It’ll take about 20 minutes to boil down to the consistency of salsa.

That’s it. Add salt and serve.

Mint goes great as a garnish.
